Akili Community Evolution makes technology available to previously disadvantaged communities through the conversion of e-waste into computers, and 3D printing cases for these computers using filament gleaned from PET bottles.
Where was your business when you entered the Challenge – and how have things evolved?
Akili was in concept stage when it entered the 2023 Challenge. Since then, the founder has been on a massive learning curve.
First, having enjoyed the prize of a Business Acceleration Course at Ocean Hub Africa (OHA), founder Andile was invited to do a presentation on his business to OHA’s Ocean Innovation Summit. It was well received, and he reported that it was a rich engagement in terms of business contacts and growth of personal understanding.
Off the back of what he learned across the engagements, Akili has pivoted somewhat. Amongst other things, Akili is 3D printing elements for mobile soccer goals for young people in informal settlements (they have a project partner who is producing the nets from used chips packets).
